As a part of my freelance work with Michael Graves Design (MGD), I was brought on to help with their design pitch for the US Open's new wayfinding system. This series of signs and banners would help visitors more easily navigate the major sporting event. MGD had already created the basic look of their signage when I joined. I helped them refine that look by choosing a master typeface and creating a ratio formula to calculate the dimensions of each sign. I also created a series of graphics that they would go on to use in their official pitch to the US Tennis Association. This pitch would win out and result in our signs debuting in the 2025 US Open.

The first challenge for MGD was picking a typeface for the signage. I was given descriptors and found a pallette of options from which they chose the final.

interstate
The Interstate typeface is what MGD finally settled on. This is the typeface that can be seen in the park today.

colors
MGD planned to use different colors to segment the park, allowing visiotrs to more easily understand what region they were in. I helped the team visualize these colors with mockups.

03
ratios
Most of the signage has colored sheet metal on the top and bottom and a white sign in the middle. MGD wanted to standardize these segment heights, so I made a series of ratios.

I owe a great deal to the folks at Michael Graves Design for allowing me to take part in this project. I specifically want to thank Robert Van Varick, Ben Wintner and Donald Strum for guiding me through my time there. It is because of them that I gained as much insight into the professional design pipeline as I did.
